Testing Vibes

When an individual becomes a team

04:45 am

The alarm clock rings.

04:50 am

The snooze function does its job, continuing to sleep is impossible.

04:55 am

The hot shower finally wakes me up.

05:15 am

The front door slams behind me, quickly to the S-Bahn (missed), get breakfast at the bakery, catch up on some sleep on the plane, arrive, sunrise – the day can begin!

The start of the week is always something special, because it usually begins with the journey to the test site. That’s why I have to get up early, but it’s rewarded! When I then start work with a tour of the test terrain, I can mentally pick up much better where I left off last time.

There is nothing better than seeing and touching what you have developed on the computer. Immediately my passion awakens. The others feel the same way – although they are all still a little tired at this early hour, I can sense the excitement that everyone is carrying. We greet each other in a friendly but curt way, everyone’s mind is already on the test or preparing for it. And there is no need for many words anyway, because everyone knows his or her task.

We are ready – everything is set, time for the briefing: check temperature of component 1, 2 and 3. What about the critical parameters? Check that everyone stays in position. Today’s goal: check power consumption and component temperature at constant speed. Is there anything special to observe? Any open points to discuss?

Before it gets serious: Short coffee break! Then we get into position. Is everyone ready for the first run? Then: RPM ramp-up!
Stop! Parameters look critical. Shut down! We have to check the logs and do the troubleshooting … time flies. Finally: error found and bug fix made, all updates checked for security relevance and all people involved informed. It was just a problem with no security impact.
We start another run. Is everyone in position? Let’s go! This time everything looks perfect, no abnormalities in the parameter sets.

A perfect run! We shut down all systems safely and it’s time for a break. Those who can, catch up on some sleep that was stolen this morning or simply enjoy the beauty of the test terrain.

It has become afternoon. Another test session looks promising. What a successful day! I get the video footage from the cameras and download all the data.
As the sun sets behind the test facilities, we tidy up: Everything has to be put where it belongs. Everyone is satisfied. Perfect for winding down and reviewing the day together.

For me, testing is one of the most intense impressions of my day-to-day work. The experiences I gain from it are incredible and I am sure that no one just goes home after such a day. The experiences leave a deep impression and influence us, our work and us as a team … and last for a long time, almost like a team event!

I can’t wait until the next campaign gets underway. Maybe you’ll be part of it? It’s definitely worth it!
